Otoplasty

What is otoplasty?

Alterations in the shape or size of the ears can cause significant discomfort or self-consciousness, leading some individuals to hide them under their hair. Otoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to correct or reshape the ears, improving their proportion, symmetry, or overall appearance.

What is the surgery like?

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and typically takes 1 to 2 hours. For the patient’s comfort, general anesthesia is administered, and the surgery is carried out in reputable medical institutions.

Depending on the anatomical changes required, discreet and minimally visible incisions are made either behind or within the natural folds of the ear. Since it is an outpatient procedure, patients can return home the same day to begin their recovery in comfort.

Who is a candidate for this surgery?

This procedure addresses not only an aesthetic concern but often long-standing emotional discomfort that may date back to childhood. Candidates are typically evaluated once facial growth is complete, allowing for safe and harmonious modifications in the shape or size of the ears.

Suitable candidates include those who wish to reposition their ears closer to the head or reduce the size of the upper or lower third of the ear. Additionally, signs of aging in the earlobes—such as elongation or volume loss—can be corrected through a lobuloplasty.

What is necessary for surgery?

A complete preoperative evaluation is required. This usually includes full laboratory testing, an electrocardiogram reviewed by a cardiologist, a chest X-ray, and an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) evaluation—particularly in cases where the patient presents symptoms or conditions that could affect breathing during surgery.

This procedure typically causes mild to moderate localized swelling. Bruising may occur during the first few days, and its intensity varies depending on the individual and the extent of the procedure. You will be advised to sleep with your head elevated on two or three pillows for the first 48 hours to help minimize swelling. Showering is permitted the day after surgery.

The use of anti-inflammatory and healing balms is recommended once the stitches are removed, usually around 10 to 15 days after the procedure.

What can I expect after surgery?

When can I return to my daily activities?

Strenuous physical activity should be avoided during the first week. However, most patients can return to work within that time. If you have an important social or professional event, it is recommended to schedule the surgery at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance to allow sufficient time for recovery and visible healing.
