Mentoplasty

What is mentoplasty?

Mentoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the projection of the chin in cases where it is underdeveloped. By improving chin definition, the surgery contributes to a more balanced and harmonious facial profile.

What is the surgery like?

The procedure typically lasts around one hour and is performed in a fully equipped operating room at a reputable hospital. For the patient’s comfort, general anesthesia is administered.

An incision is made either inside the mouth or beneath the chin, depending on the patient’s anatomy and the type of facial implant used. Implants come in various shapes, sizes, and materials, selected according to the desired result and overall facial harmony.

Mentoplasty is an outpatient procedure, allowing the patient to return home a few hours after surgery to recover. It is generally not painful—most patients experience only mild discomfort, which is temporary and manageable with proper post-operative care.

Who is a candidate for this surgery?
This procedure is suitable for patients of any gender who wish to improve facial harmony—whether on its own or in combination with rhinoplasty—and who have proper dental occlusion. In cases of malocclusion, orthognathic surgery performed by a maxillofacial surgeon may be required. There is no upper age limit for this surgery; however, it is recommended to wait until facial growth is complete, typically between ages 18 and 20.

What is necessary before surgery?
A standard preoperative assessment includes comprehensive laboratory tests, an electrocardiogram reviewed by a cardiologist, a chest X-ray, and an ENT evaluation—especially if the patient presents any symptoms or signs related to breathing that could be relevant for the surgery.

This procedure typically results in mild to moderate localized swelling. Bruising is expected during the first few days, and its intensity varies depending on the individual and the extent of the procedure. You will be advised to sleep with your head elevated on two or three pillows for the first 48 hours to help reduce swelling. Showering is permitted the following day.

During the initial recovery period, it is recommended to consume soft foods, cold beverages, and avoid anything hot.

The use of anti-inflammatory balms, proper dental hygiene, and appropriate mouthwashes is also advised to support healing and minimize discomfort.

What can I expect after surgery?

When can I return to my daily activities?

Strenuous physical activity should be avoided during the first week. However, most patients are able to return to work within that time. If you have a significant social or professional event, it is recommended to schedule the surgery at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance to allow for proper healing and a more refined appearance.
